We designed this modern weekend house for a small, very flat property with substantial old trees in East Hampton, Long Island. We positioned the house to relate specifically to the trees, and to shape exterior living spaces also defined by landscape. A square entry-court is an additional outdoor room; it shelters a striking crape myrtle. The house’s exterior surfaces of stucco, brick, and wood emphasize the intersecting one- and two-story volumes, the courtyard and second floor terrace, and the mass of the fireplace.
