Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the Senate

Boston, MA
32,000 square feet
2008
Type: Civic

This invited competition requested design proposals for an Edward M. Kennedy “Senatorial Library” adjacent to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum on UMass’s Boston campus.

We combined a variety of facilities under one roof: a study center; archive and library; spaces for public forums, classes, and educational programs; offices and facilities for archival activities; an interactive digital presentation lab; and, most uniquely and importantly, a replica of the U.S. Senate Chamber, envisioned by the senator to be a educational tool in teaching all ages about the workings of democracy.
